Open Office is a free, legal alternative to MS Office for PCs and Macs. With its suite of programs, you can edit and create Word, Excel, Access and Powerpoint files. These files are fully compatible with the MS Office versions, so you can send them to a colleague and she/he can open them with no problem. Open Office doesn’t have a program that corresponds to Outlook (or Entourage for Mac), so if you need Outlook (with its powerful calendar, contacts and email program) or Entourage you will have to buy it. But if you need Word, Powerpoint, Access or Excel and don’t want to purchase them, check out the OpenOffice versions. Open Office is free for both personal and commercial use.
