According to this article on the Health IT Security web site, business email compromise attempts doubled in 2018. Business email compromise occurs when a hacker attempts to impersonate an employee (usually an executive) in order to request money be transferred from company employees.
More broadly, there was a 25 percent increase in malicious emails in the last year.

Businesses should warn their employees to be careful if they receive emails purporting to be from financial officers or other employees requesting transfers of large sums of money. These requests should always be verified by another method such as a phone call.
